All The Work In The World

verse:

To say that's all that's on my mind,

Well, I can't stay awake,

To sleep on through the day.

Refined a process,

For making progress,

Now, I think it's harmless,

We will sleep tonight,

To make it through the fight.

I'm moving now,

At an incredible pace.

The world spins 'round,

I'll stay in place.

chorus:

Afraid to say what's on my mind

I can't sleep tonight.

Guess I'm well,

Guess I'm fine,

I can't stay awake,

Hey, hey, hey....

verse:

I slept in satisfaction,

Woke up in misery,

Tonight I can do it again.

If you're feeling sick,

Get a sense of humor about,

We can all have a laugh about it.

I think I'll get a new job,

And they can pay me,

To be happy,

Until the sleep catches on.

All the work in the world,

Can't keep the energy,

From leaving me,

From leaving me.

"All The Work In The World" marks another major shift in musical style for Pond Monkeys.  Beginning with a shimmering, beautiful guitar line, drums and bass gradually build into a driving verse.  The lyrics were written by Alex, and the music was worked up by the band as a whole.  The lyrics aren't meant to be taken literally or as any kind of profound statement so much as they are meant to compliment and add to the "sleepy" feeling of this particularly atmospheric song.  Derek lays down a solid bass line during the verse and chorus before entering into an interesting bass riff on the extended bridge.  Daniel plays variations of the same chording throughout the song and adds texture with a delay-covered bridge.  Austin keeps the song moving with upbeat drums.  Austin and Derek add percussion to the recorded version with shakers, tambourines and handclaps.

"All The Work In The World" was debuted at Rusty's Bar & Grill in August, 2004.  It was the first song recorded for Breathing Buildings.
